A while ago I stumbled upon a sure-fire way of quickly getting rid of the hiccups. Before that I had been advised of, and tried many of the well known “cures”, all of which I had found to either totally fail, or be at best inconsistent in efficacy. You know the ones; slowly drinking water, drinking warm water, breathing into a paper bag, scaring them away (how do you actually do that?), holding your breath, filling your lungs and swallowing, and so on.
Thinking that maybe my method would probably be well known I performed a Google search. There certainly are a lot of methods discussed. I even found two I haven’t tried; eating a teaspoon of sugar or putting your fingers in your ears, but interestingly I could not find my method. So here at last, for all of you hiccups sufferers, I will reveal the true, ultimate, sure-fire hiccups cure (that doesn’t involve cutting your head off)…
To cure hiccups, stand on your head.
No kidding, this really works. Just do a head stand for about half a minute until you’re sure they’re gone. If you’re not skilled in yoga like the women in the photo, just put your head on a cushion and do a three point headstand against a wall for support. It’s easy and fast, and helps with headaches too! Others may wonder what you’re doing, but it doesn’t look nearly as odd as hyperventilating with your fingers in your ears.

I’ve never heard this one.
In the spirit of sharing, if you need to sneeze, I recommend looking at a light bulb. I’ve never tried this while doing a headstand, but it may help as well.

I often find that I sneeze when looking in direct sunlight! But, I have been sneezing way more this fall then I ever have, so I’ll definitely try this!

Will definitely have to try this one…Although I have always had luck just drinking a glass of water.

So good to know! I frequently get the hiccups because I tend to eat way to fast, specifically when I am hungry. This usually on happens with starchy foods, like breads.
November 2nd, 2010 at 2:43 pm
There’s also the old positive affirmation method. I dated someone who believed – really believed – he could only get three hiccups, and after that his “spell” was over. It worked like a charm. It worked for me for awhile too. Then we broke up, and I stopped believing.
November 2nd, 2010 at 3:42 pm
What “bethhull” said regarding “believing in only getting three hiccups…” reminded me:
Years ago a roomate told me while I was having a hiccupping spell, “I have a cure for hiccups….you don’t really have them.” It really took me by suprise and my hiccups stopped. For the next 5 or so times, whenever I hiccuped I said to myself, “I don’t really have them” and they instantly stopped. Then I began wondering if I could ever get hiccups again (like I was worried there was something wrong with me if I didn’t hiccup?) so next time I got a hiccup I said, “I do have hiccups”. They continued and to this day I can’t stop them, though I hardly get them anymore so they’re a welcome distraction. But I will try the headstand just for fun!
November 2nd, 2010 at 3:10 pm
Someone told me the other day to picture a white horse running through a field. Seemed odd at the time but a few minutes later I noticed my hiccups were gone.
November 2nd, 2010 at 3:20 pm
Guaranteed cure for hiccups: 1 teaspoon baking soda in about 6oz of water. Drink without stopping.
It has NEVER failed me. (But, perhaps, not as cute a cure as that shown.)
November 2nd, 2010 at 3:29 pm
Hmmph, I think it is all to do with shifting focus. I will have to check on the headstand method next time those pesky hiccups arise.
November 2nd, 2010 at 3:32 pm
I needed this the other day! The pizza man came to my door and – the poor dear – said he’d had the hiccups for 4 hours! I should’ve invited him to stand on his head in my living room! I’ll be sure to try this out next time I get them.
November 2nd, 2010 at 3:35 pm
Dumbest cure ever that has never failed me: hold your breath for 20 seconds and think about pickles. My daughter brought that one home from middle school several years ago and I thought she was nuts. But for whatever insane reason, it works.
November 2nd, 2010 at 6:54 pm
Great…now I’m thinking of pickles. Not that this is a bad thing…
November 2nd, 2010 at 3:46 pm
I might have to try this for headaches. Thanks.

definitely works for headaches, but I will have to advise my students the next time they get hiccups in yoga class
November 2nd, 2010 at 4:14 pm
After my hiccups are gone, I’d have to lay down to get rid of the rush from the blood going to my head. But at least the hiccups would be gone, right?
November 2nd, 2010 at 4:35 pm
You couldn’t find it on Google?! How random! I’ve heard of this one before, personally what works for me is daring myself to hiccup. Honestly! Nothing like a bit of reverse psychology. Could be limitations to standing on your head (location, space, physical ability etc) too. Thanks for sharing.
November 2nd, 2010 at 4:35 pm
Wow, that’s amazing. I will definitely have to try it out! Thanks, and congrats on being Freshly Pressed!
November 2nd, 2010 at 4:39 pm
Oh, thanks for the laugh at the end. I tried to imagine that and could see one of my kids putting their fingers in their ears. Congrats on being freshly pressed!
November 2nd, 2010 at 4:42 pm
When I *haven’t* hiccupped all day, I know something is really wrong. I’ll try the headstand the next time my hiccups get painful. Thanks!
November 2nd, 2010 at 4:46 pm
Glad you found a quick cure. Hiccupps are the worst!
Blessings,
Ava
Congrats on being Freshly Pressed!
November 2nd, 2010 at 5:03 pm
My parents always gave me a glass of water to drink while they stood behind me and (gently) pulled back on my ears. I swear it works; I’ve successfully used it on my kids, too. The problem is, though, you can’t do it alone when you have the hiccups.
Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed!
November 2nd, 2010 at 5:09 pm
Love this! I am a kid and any excuse I can get to stand on my head or put my feet against the wall…I am all for. Thank you. Hunter71

One that has never failed me and the others I have told is to eat a spoonful of peanut butter. After your done the hiccups are gone, plus its an excuse to eat peanut butter since I like it so much.
November 2nd, 2010 at 5:22 pm
My daughter who just turned 16 and has been a gymnast since before she was 3 told me that the only way she could get rid of hiccups was to do a handstand. When I showed her your blog she said, “I told you it worked!” Maybe my kids are smarter than I am after all.
November 2nd, 2010 at 5:32 pm
Thank u for the suggestion.
I used to suffer a lot with continuous hickups, which will last for at least 2 to 3 days. I will try this.
November 2nd, 2010 at 5:41 pm
A classic that has *never* failed me, but that most people don’t know how to do properly, is drinking from the far side of a glass.
Most people turn the glass around to get to the far side, which then makes it the near side. Instead, fill a cup only about a quarter full of water, and lean over it so your bottom lip is making contact with the inside of the far rim of the cup, and your top lip is on the outside. Slowly bend forward until you can slurp some of the water out. I promise, when you straighten up again your hiccups will be gone!
November 2nd, 2010 at 5:49 pm
Uhm… I think i will stick to my tried and tested “drink a glass of water slowly” method… i don’t want to risk a trip to the ER…lol..
November 2nd, 2010 at 5:56 pm
Having a proper snog always cures them for me.
November 2nd, 2010 at 5:56 pm
My youngest gets the hiccups all the time. I’ll have to have him try this.
November 2nd, 2010 at 6:21 pm
I will be giving this a shot next time the hiccups arrive.. perhaps I’ll have a few beers tonight and hopefully I can try it out ;^)
November 2nd, 2010 at 6:44 pm
Yikes. Looking at that photo, I need the second best cure. What I’ve done in the past is to bend forward and sip water from the opposite side of the cup/glass. It seems to work.
November 2nd, 2010 at 6:53 pm
omg this is crazy…a little inconvenient if your out and about or something but if its a sure thing then awesome i know i’ll deff. give it a try…
November 2nd, 2010 at 6:55 pm
Wow, I have a feeling this will prove to be highly resourceful! My good friend Alison taught me how to cure hiccups for someone else as follows: Typically the hiccup victim will get to the point in hiccuping where they exercise a plea for help, “arghh I just cant get rid of these hiccups, what do I do!?” Ask the hiccup victim nonchalantly what they ate for breakfast last Saturday, then lunch, dinner, dessert, etc. They get so distracted figuring out what they ate a week ago their brain literally forgets to hiccup! Works every time!

A quick cure for the hiccups…also a quick way to break your neck!
November 2nd, 2010 at 6:59 pm
I can’t stand on my head.
Damn.
November 2nd, 2010 at 7:37 pm
My newborn son is six weeks old, and he has a very annoying case of the hiccups EVERYTIME he finishes a bottle. I’ll suggest this to my wife and see what she thinks.
November 2nd, 2010 at 7:52 pm
I’ve used my method since I was a child and it ALWAYS works. Take a big table spoon of peanut butter. Put the whole thing in your mouth and swallow it down (you don’t have to swallow it particularly fast though). I had the hiccups at a bar one time and I couldn’t wait to get back to my hotel to get some peanut butter from their continental breakfast area. Sure enough, within 1 minute they were gone.

My theory is that any hiccup cure works if it takes your concentration away from focusing on the hiccups. So a headstand works until you get too good at them and they don’t require your concentration anymore – then they stop working. I used to always think drinking water from a glass backwards worked, until I could practically do it in my sleep. I think the real, only surefire way to get rid of hiccups is to be scared, which is pretty much impossible to set-up or to do on your own.

Tried your method. Complete success!
Though I have tried scaring them away. I turned off all the lights in my house, and my sister came up behind me which scared the living daylights out of me! But my hiccups were gone. It depends on how easily scared you are I guess. I’m easily scared. lol
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:06 am
A teaspoon of sugar works for me.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:39 am
What a way to cure hiccups. I’m sure it works–it’s weird enough to. But you can’t exactly stand on your head in public without looking a mental person, can you? I prefer just letting the hiccups go away on their own, or gulping down five cups of water. Holding my breath never works for me, sadly. I still hiccup when I’m holding my breath. Well, great info, and maybe I’ll try it if I ever find a wall I can prop against and not look too insane.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:49 am
Awesome, I will have to tell my friends about this
Congrats on being freshly pressed.

November 3rd, 2010 at 3:45 am
That’s funny ya know when I was a “KID”, I used to try all types of things to make stuff I didn’t like go away seeing this just makes me laugh. Because for me it never really worked.
November 3rd, 2010 at 4:04 am
Wow. I’ve heard a lot of solutions, but never this one. Are you going to be able to cure your hiccups when you’re 60? haha I like the creativity though.
I think it honestly might be a different cure for everyone. For me, I’ve never had any trouble getting rid of them when I simply hold my breath, take a gulp of water, continue holding my breath for a few seconds and then exhale. It’s been a simple solution.
Thanks for the fun advice!

Holding your breath for 30 sec or longer, once or twice or thrice in a row, will work in 100% cases.
November 3rd, 2010 at 8:38 am
Astonishing remedy!(*But when I stand on my head, my upper and lower eyelids swell terribly..I end up looking like I ran into a poison ivy bush:-))…I will share your advice with others. By the way, any remedy for sneezing?
November 3rd, 2010 at 8:48 am
Thanks, I’m really going to try this, lately I have been getting the hiccups and I am always prone to headaches. If it works I will be very grateful!

cool..hehehehe
November 3rd, 2010 at 2:42 pm
Hah, I think my remedy and your remedy are like cousins or something. When I was younger I’d heard that to get rid of hiccups you had to stand on your head and swallow a sip of water. But I was at school during an attack and couldn’t stand on my head in the middle of a hallway on tile. So I took a mouthful of water and bent all the way over so I was upside down, and swallowed the water. It still worked! Maybe you don’t actually need to stand on your head, just be upside down. And maybe you don’t actually need to swallow water, just swallowing in general. *shrug*
November 3rd, 2010 at 2:47 pm
interesting. will tell this to everyone i know. and i would surely try this when i get the hiccups.
November 3rd, 2010 at 2:59 pm
It never occured to me that yoga could be the cure all for so many things including headaches. If supporting one’s head safely while doing a headstand helps it is worth a try. As a person who suffers from frequent PMS headaches and a vitamin D deficiency I can certainly reap from some of the benefits yoga can offer. Being a swimmer who performs yoga as a warmup has become an essential part of my exercise routine. Next to zumba dancing I can’t think of any better way to start the day!

Well, there is one question: How to do the “head stand” in public, or at a crowded restaurant? OK, I got the only working hiccups cure on the planet. It will get you rid of hiccups every time you are bothered by any. I got the “unhiccuper”, or the “hiccups buster” that gets you rid of hiccups in just 15 seconds, every time without fail. This dream cure gets your diaphragm rid of its spasms. You can do it everywhere in case you start hiccuping. It is very easy and 100% safe and efective. Here is what to do: Standing, or sitting on a chair lean your head backwards as much as you can, to the maximum. Breathe normally. Count up to 15. Slowly bring your head back to normal position. The hiccups are gone (for a long time).

apple cider vinegar. one sip and you won’t hiccup again after swallowing the stuff. extremely tangy though

Nope tried several different times. Doesn’t work

I have since discovered that 1% of the population have a particular gene variant that means this will not work. Sorry about that.
